Introduction

This section covers a several aspects of KS 4 Science Education. The intention is to provide online content and activities for pupils, along with additional teacher support in the form of suggestions and ideas for classroom work and downloadable activity sheets.

The pupil content provides information on the basic facts about the Menstrual cycle.

Menstruation

An introduction to the 28 day menstrual cycle and the hormones involved.

The menstrual cycle

The pupil screens cover the changes which occur during the menstrual cycle in the ovaries and the uterus by breaking it down into sections by day.

  • Days 1 - 5 Menstruation
  • Days 6 - 13 Repair of the uterus lining
    Maturation of an egg cell
  • Day 14 Ovulation
  • Days 15 - 28 The potential for fertilisation
    The maintenance of the uterus lining

A cyclical diagram puts together the complete 28 day cycle of changes

Learning outcomes
  • To understand that ovulation and the uterus lining are controlled by hormones from the ovaries and pituitary gland.
  • RTo explain the role in the menstrual cycle of:
    FSH - causing egg maturation and oestrogen secretion
    Oestrogen - inhibiting secretion of FSH and stimulating LH secretion.
    LH - stimulating ovulation and progesterone secretion Progesterone - in maintaining uterus lining, and inhibiting FSH secretion.
Extension work

Investigate the use of hormones in fertility treatments that stimulate the release of eggs from the ovaries.

Compare the human menstrual cycle with the oestrous cycle of common domestic animals eg. dog, sheep, hamster.

Period pains

This section explains some of the causes of period pains and methods of pain relief.

Extension work

Find some Alternative Therapy methods for relieving period pains.
